Moscow, August 27, 2026: Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has issued a strong warning to Britain and other Western countries over their military support for Ukraine, saying Moscow could respond to Ukrainian attacks involving British weapons by targeting British military facilities and equipment.

Speaking at a Foreign Ministry briefing in Moscow, Zakharova accused London and Paris of escalating the conflict by providing Ukraine with technology and support connected to long-range Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles. Russia's Foreign Ministry has separately confirmed that Zakharova addressed the issue during her August 27 briefing. 

Russia Warns of Possible Retaliation Against British Military Targets

Zakharova said Moscow has repeatedly warned that Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory using British weapons could lead to retaliation against British military assets.

According to her statement, potential targets could include British military facilities and equipment inside Ukraine as well as outside the country.

She also called on the British government to reconsider what Moscow describes as a hostile and aggressive policy toward Russia, warning that continued escalation could push the conflict into a new and potentially more dangerous phase. 

The warning represents a significant escalation in Moscow's rhetoric toward London and comes amid growing Western involvement in Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities.

Moscow Accuses Britain and France of "Playing With Fire"

Zakharova accused Britain and France of attempting to distance themselves from responsibility for Ukrainian attacks by transferring missile-production technology to Ukraine.

She argued that allowing Ukraine to carry out more of the manufacturing process would not remove responsibility from the countries supplying the technology.

The Russian spokeswoman described the policy as "playing with fire", warning that the consequences could become unpredictable. Reuters reported that Zakharova made similar remarks during the August 27 briefing. 

Britain Gives Ukraine Access to Storm Shadow Technology

The dispute intensified after Britain announced that Ukraine would receive access to classified technology needed to support domestic production of Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles.

France has also supported technology cooperation connected with the European missile system known as SCALP, which is the French designation for the same missile family.

Moscow argues that this assistance could allow Ukraine to expand its ability to conduct strikes at greater distances.

Russia Links Western Weapons to Recent Strikes

Zakharova also referred to recent attacks in Russian-controlled areas and other regions that Moscow says involved Western-supplied weapons.

In the statement provided to the Foreign Ministry, she claimed that a strike on August 26 involving British and French Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG missiles hit a shopping center in Donetsk and injured eight people, including two children. These figures and the attribution are claims made by the Russian Foreign Ministry and should not be treated as independently verified.

She further accused Ukraine of carrying out attacks against civilian buses, residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure in several regions.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry's account, the claimed incidents included:

• A drone attack on a children's center in Krasnodar Krai.
• A drone attack on a passenger bus in the Belgorod region.
• An attack on a passenger bus in the Donetsk People's Republic.
• Drone attacks affecting residential buildings in the Kursk region.
• A UAV incident involving a passenger bus near Sevastopol.
• Attacks in the Luhansk People's Republic that Russia says caused civilian deaths and injuries.
• Strikes around Enerhodar and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Moscow Claims Hundreds of Russian Civilians Were Affected

Zakharova said that, during the previous week, Ukrainian attacks had killed 46 people and injured more than 400 civilians, according to Russian authorities.

She said five of those killed were children and that 21 children were among the overall casualties reported by Moscow. The Russian Foreign Ministry said the largest number of casualties occurred in Belgorod, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

These casualty figures are part of the Russian Foreign Ministry's account of the conflict.

Russia Accuses Western Countries of Direct Involvement

Zakharova went beyond criticism of weapons deliveries, arguing that Britain, France, Germany and other Western countries bear responsibility for supporting Ukraine militarily.

She specifically criticized the transfer of technology that could allow Ukraine to manufacture long-range missiles domestically.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow believes that Western countries cannot avoid responsibility simply by shifting part of the production process to Ukrainian facilities.

Moscow Also Criticizes the "Coalition of the Willing"

Another major part of Zakharova's statement concerned the Western-backed coalition supporting Ukraine.

She criticized plans for a potential multinational force in Ukraine, arguing that the deployment of foreign military personnel would represent a further escalation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that any foreign contingents that interfere with Russia's military objectives would be regarded as legitimate military targets. This is a statement of Moscow's position, rather than an independently established legal determination.

Russia Questions Western Support for Kyiv

Zakharova also criticized continued Western financial and military assistance to the Ukrainian government.

She claimed that Ukraine is facing significant financial pressure and said Western countries were preparing additional assistance for Kyiv's military and defense-industrial sector.

She further argued that continued Western support was prolonging the conflict rather than helping bring about a settlement.

Moscow Raises Concerns Over Ukraine's Future

The Russian spokeswoman also discussed Ukraine's domestic political situation, accusing Kyiv of restricting political rights and avoiding elections.

She referred to statements by Ukrainian officials concerning the difficulty of holding elections during wartime and argued that the Ukrainian government was using the conflict to maintain its position in power.

These are political accusations made by Moscow and remain part of the broader dispute between Russia, Ukraine and their respective supporters.

Russia's Message to London

The central message from Zakharova's briefing was directed at Britain.

Moscow says that the deeper Britain's military involvement becomes, particularly through the transfer of long-range missile technology, the greater the risk of direct confrontation between Russia and Britain.

Russia has therefore warned that British military assets could potentially become targets if British-supplied weapons are used in attacks on Russian territory. Reuters and other international reports confirmed that this was the key warning delivered by Zakharova on August 27.
