Following the recent deadly attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, allegedly carried out by Pakistani-backed militants, China has called for immediate steps to de-escalate tensions between India and Pakistan. Speaking at a press briefing, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized China's support for a swift, fair, and just investigation into the incident.
"China welcomes any measure that helps to cool down the situation and supports conducting a just investigation as soon as possible," the spokesperson stated. Stressing the importance of regional stability, China also urged both India and Pakistan to show restraint.
"As the neighbor of both India and Pakistan, China hopes that both sides will exercise restraint, work in the same direction, handle relevant differences properly through dialogue and consultation, and jointly uphold peace and stability in the region," the spokesperson added.
The attack, which occurred in the popular tourist region of Pahalgam, has heightened tensions between the two South Asian neighbors. India has condemned the incident strongly, while Pakistan has denied involvement.
China’s neutral stance and call for dialogue reflect its broader strategic interest in maintaining stability in the region, particularly given its economic investments and border interests with both countries.
As the international community watches developments closely, calls for a transparent investigation and diplomatic resolution are growing louder. China’s latest statement underscores the urgent need for measured responses to prevent further escalation.
