China has dismissed suggestions that its role as a peace mediator between Cambodia and Thailand has been compromised following Thailand’s discovery of Chinese-made weapons in Cambodia. Responding to a Reuters question, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China had already addressed the matter and noted that Thailand had also issued a clarification.
Guo emphasized that China remains a close neighbor and friend to both Cambodia and Thailand and is closely monitoring the evolving border situation between the two Southeast Asian countries. He said China does not wish to see continued fighting and expressed deep sorrow over civilian casualties on both sides caused by the conflict.
According to the spokesperson, China has been actively engaged in shuttle diplomacy to help de-escalate tensions, working in line with the wishes of both countries. He revealed that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held phone conversations with the foreign ministers of Cambodia and Thailand, underlining Beijing’s commitment to facilitating dialogue.
In addition, the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Special Envoy for Asian Affairs has embarked on another round of shuttle diplomacy, visiting both Phnom Penh and Bangkok. The goal of these engagements, Guo said, is to help bridge differences between the two sides, push for an early ceasefire, and create conditions for restoring peace along the disputed border.
China called on both Cambodia and Thailand to prioritize peace and stability, keep in mind the broader interests of their peoples, and bring hostilities to an end as soon as possible. Guo stressed that Beijing would continue to play a constructive role “in its own way” by promoting talks, rebuilding mutual trust, and supporting efforts toward long-term stability between the two neighbors.
