China has strongly condemned the United States’ announcement of a massive arms sales package to Taiwan worth up to US$11 billion, calling it one of the most serious violations of the one-China principle and a dangerous escalation that threatens peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Responding to a question from Bloomberg, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the U.S. decision to sell advanced weapons to China’s Taiwan region blatantly violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. He stated that the move severely infringes upon China’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, while sending an extremely wrong and dangerous signal to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces.
According to Guo Jiakun, the arms sales undermine regional peace and stability and increase the risk of military confrontation across the Taiwan Strait. He emphasized that China firmly opposes and strongly condemns the U.S. action, which he described as irresponsible and destabilizing.
The spokesperson accused separatist forces on the island of attempting to advance their independence agenda through military buildup while squandering public funds on weapons purchases. He warned that such actions risk turning Taiwan into a “powder keg” and accelerating the danger of military conflict rather than enhancing security.
Guo Jiakun stressed that arming Taiwan will not change the inevitable failure of “Taiwan independence.” Instead, he said these moves will only push the region closer to confrontation and instability. He further warned that the United States’ attempt to use Taiwan as a tool to contain China will ultimately backfire and fail.
Reiterating China’s long-standing position, Guo said the Taiwan question lies at the core of China’s core interests and represents the first red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations. He emphasized that no one should underestimate the firm determination and strong capability of the Chinese government and the Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
China urged the United States to strictly abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, and to honor the serious commitments made by U.S. leaders. Guo called on Washington to immediately stop what he described as the dangerous act of arming Taiwan.
He concluded by stating that China will take resolute and strong measures to defend its national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity in response to actions that challenge its fundamental interests.
