PM Modi’s Historic Visit to Argentina: A New Chapter in India-Latin America Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Argentina marked a historic milestone in India’s diplomatic outreach. This visit was the first bilateral trip by any Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years, underscoring its importance in reshaping the future of India-Argentina relations. The last time PM Modi had visited Argentina was during the G20 Summit in 2018, but this time, the agenda was entirely bilateral and strategic.

PM Modi held a crucial meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires. During this meeting, both nations agreed to deepen cooperation in several critical sectors, including energy, defense, digital technology, and mineral exploration. This high-level dialogue has given a significant boost to the strategic partnership between India and Argentina, opening new avenues of collaboration and shared growth.

One of the major highlights of this bilateral engagement was the decision to work together on critical minerals, shale gas, defense production, space cooperation, telemedicine, digital health solutions, and information technology. The two leaders also agreed to explore the possibility of a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), which would enhance trade flows and economic integration between the two nations.

Argentina showed keen interest in India's advancements in digital public infrastructure and expressed a positive approach toward adopting India’s UPI digital payment system. In a significant move, Argentina also agreed to fast-track the approval process for Indian pharmaceutical products, signaling growing trust in India’s healthcare and pharma sectors.

Argentina is a country rich in natural resources. It possesses the world's second-largest shale gas reserves and the fourth-largest shale oil reserves. Additionally, the country is abundant in lithium, copper, and rare earth elements — all of which are critical for India’s future energy needs and industrial development. India’s state-owned company, Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL), has already secured mining rights in Argentina, laying the foundation for a long-term energy and mineral partnership.

During their discussions, the two nations also emphasized joint ventures in sectors like energy, space, and minerals, and committed to identifying new areas of cooperation. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India and Argentina share common democratic values, making them natural partners in global diplomacy and development. He added that both nations must harness this partnership to scale new heights.

On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi described his meeting with President Milei as excellent. He highlighted the occasion as a celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Argentina and five years since the two countries elevated their ties to a strategic partnership. He expressed optimism about the road ahead, stating that while the progress so far has been significant, the future holds even greater promise.

PM Modi also thanked President Milei for Argentina’s support after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, reflecting the growing political and security understanding between the two countries.

India’s expertise in defense manufacturing, space research, information technology, and digital public infrastructure (DPI) can be immensely beneficial for Argentina. India also offered to share its experience in these fields to assist Argentina’s ongoing development and reform efforts. In the areas of telemedicine and digital health, India’s capabilities can help Argentina improve access to quality healthcare and provide affordable medical services, especially in remote regions.

Foreign Secretary for Eastern Affairs, P. Kumaran, noted that this visit came at a very critical time as Argentina is undergoing major economic reforms — reforms that India has itself gone through in the past. He emphasized that both countries can collaborate closely as they understand each other's challenges and potential.

This bilateral visit formed the third leg of PM Modi’s five-nation tour. Before Argentina, he had visited two other countries, and following the Argentina visit, he has already arrived in Brazil to participate in the BRICS Summit. After Brazil, he is scheduled to visit Namibia, continuing India’s strategic outreach across continents.

This landmark visit has undoubtedly given a new direction and momentum to India-Argentina ties. It represents a forward-looking approach in global diplomacy and strengthens India’s presence in Latin America through comprehensive cooperation in economy, energy, health, and technology.
