China has addressed a range of issues concerning India, the United States, Nepal and the wider Global South, including speculation over Chinese President Xi Jinping’s possible visit to India for the BRICS Summit, an investigation recommendation involving Xiaomi, high-level China-US engagements, US-backed AI supply-chain initiatives in Panama and support for Nepal following devastating flooding.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded to the questions during a media briefing, providing Beijing’s position on each issue.
No Information on Chinese Leader’s Possible India Visit
Asked by AFP whether the Chinese leader would travel to India this weekend for the BRICS Summit, Guo Jiakun said he had no information to share at the moment.
The response did not confirm or deny reports regarding a possible visit, leaving the question of the Chinese leader’s attendance unanswered.
China Calls for Fair Environment for Companies in India
Reuters asked the Chinese Foreign Ministry about reports that India’s Serious Fraud Office had recommended an investigation into Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi over alleged irregularities in its business model and compliance with India’s foreign investment law.
Guo Jiakun said he was not familiar with the specifics of the matter.
However, he emphasized the broader nature of China-India economic and trade cooperation, saying that it is mutually beneficial.
China hopes India will provide a fair, just, transparent and non-discriminatory environment for companies from all countries operating and investing in India, he said.
China and US in Communication Over High-Level Engagements
The briefing also addressed relations between China and the United States.
NBC referred to a recent meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Ambassador to China David Perdue, during which Wang reportedly urged both sides to “eliminate interference and overcome obstacles” to high-level engagements between the two countries.
Guo Jiakun referred to China’s previously released readout of the meeting and stressed the importance of head-of-state diplomacy.
According to Guo, diplomacy between the leaders of China and the United States plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance for bilateral relations.
He added that China and the United States are currently communicating regarding interactions between the two heads of state within the year.
China Criticizes Exclusive Groupings in AI Supply Chains
The Global Times asked China to comment on reports concerning a pilot AI supply-chain credentialing and provenance platform introduced by the US Embassy in Panama.
The platform was described as a project designed to verify the origin, custody and compliance status of cargo connected to AI infrastructure, semiconductors and critical minerals. The United States reportedly said the project was under evaluation.
Some media outlets have characterized the initiative as potentially contributing to US control over technology and industrial supply chains and as part of efforts to restrict China’s access to technology.
Guo Jiakun said China had noticed the relevant reports.
He emphasized that the development of artificial intelligence concerns the common welfare of humanity and said all parties should work together to promote the open and inclusive development of AI for the benefit of people.
According to Guo, exclusive groupings and geopolitical calculations are not conducive to technological development and progress in Latin American and Caribbean countries or the wider Global South.
He said China is ready to work with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and other parties to jointly build what he described as a just and equitable global AI governance system.
China also supports developing AI for the good of people worldwide, Guo said.
China Says It Is Ready to Assist Nepal With Post-Disaster Reconstruction
Nepal’s reconstruction needs were also raised during the briefing.
Reuters asked whether Nepal had requested financial assistance from China after saying that wealthier countries and international agencies should contribute toward the US$5 billion estimated to be needed for rebuilding following flooding.
Guo Jiakun said that after a sudden mudslide struck areas along the China-Nepal border, China had urgently carried out rescue and relief efforts domestically while immediately reaching out to Nepal to support its emergency response and disaster relief.
He described China and Nepal as traditional friends and close neighbors.
Guo said China stands ready to assist Nepal with post-disaster reconstruction to the best of its capability and based on Nepal’s needs.
He also expressed confidence that the Nepali people would overcome the difficulties and rebuild their homes soon under the leadership of their government.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s responses covered several major areas of China’s foreign policy and international engagement, from relations with India and the United States to technology governance and humanitarian assistance in Nepal. Beijing reiterated its emphasis on mutually beneficial economic cooperation, high-level diplomatic communication, open and inclusive AI development, and assistance to neighboring countries affected by disasters.
